It is one of the greatest comic (graphic story if you will) masterpieces of all time and is actually on display in the Louve and has been shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (I personally would kill to have the collection in book form. One day i’ll finally get around to getting it.)
Back in 1905, when the entire comic strip genre was in it’s infancy, before comic books or anyone like Eisner or Kirby had started fooling making history with their experiments, Windsor McCay cranked out a weekly strip called Little Nemo In Slumberland in the New York Herald and New York American. The strip followed the adventures of a young boy, Nemo, as he made his way to Slumberland at the behest of King Morpheus.
However, in telling this tale, McCAy, with almost no predecessors from which to draw upon, created a visual masterpiece, a brilliant psychedelic exploration of form and graphic narrative unequaled.
