The Dieselpunk Radio Hour Overture

In one of my more stupid moves, i am actually going to post the overture to the Dieselpunk opera.

It may not be finished. I may decide in a month i was an idiot and seriously dislike some aspect of it. Please accept this as a… work in progress. Beta version.  Test run. Trial version. You get the picture. The tiny voice bits are only scratch tracks and will be replaced.

It is not the steampunk overture. This is not steampunk. This is dieselpunk. We have all new tales to tell of a new time in the same place. But before we begin our tales, an overture.

  1. As a solution to the somewhat awkward transition I would suggest sneaking in a few false entrances of the original melody at the end of the vamp. We’ve heard it already by then so just hearing the first five notes will make us crave the whole thing again. Really the right place for it to start is the saxophone entrance. I mean, I love the current sax part but if mr. saxophone played some subtle unresolved entrances you’d be getting more bang for the instrument buck.

Just a thought, I’m sure you’ll come up with something great!

  3. It’s 10 years after the SO.

Hmmmmmm. Believe it or not when i went straight into the end bit withOUT the pause it was worse. Okay, the fact remains that there is an awkwardness. Thank you folks VERY much for discussing this with me. It will make for a better piece. I have no bloody idea what to do to fix it, but i’ll come up with something.

  5. This is fantastic! But I’m inclined to agree with Tom Dibeler. The last melody seems slightly out of place. If I were to put my own, not musically trained, musically-stunted opinion into it, I’d say it just starts too suddenly. You’ve made a sort of pause, and then it bursts in, without any noticeable transition. This might be what you were looking for, I’m not sure, but that was the thing that struck me as being off. That said, this is just me being all ponderous.

Otherwise, I loved it! I loved the jazz feel to it, and I can’t wait to see how New Albion has changed through the years. Can I have a smidgen of clarification? For some reason, I’m sure I read you say that this was 40 years after the Steampunk Opera, but I’m slightly convinced I’ve made this up.

    1. You mean the melody section at the end right? I have had no end of trouble with that. I have redone that part numerous times. I’ve thought of changing the melody, but i really want this particular melody to be a running theme. The song is set up to have the melody quietly at the beginning then loud and intensely at the end. The whole song builds around it and yet i have had NO end of trouble.

What you hear now is the best end version i’ve acheived thus far. However, doesn’t suck is a little lower then i’m aiming at, and it’s quite interesting to hear an outside opinion and that you did in fact pick out that trouble section. In my estimation my choices are 3: 1. leave it 2. change the melody to something that works better at the end of the build 3. Keep trying out different methods of doing the end section with that melody.
