<\/a><\/p>\nWell my friends, the great\u00a0Hans Rudolf Giger is dead at age 74.<\/p>\n
He was Swiss, originally from the city of\u00a0Chur.\u00a0\u00a0His father, a chemist, viewed art as a “breadless profession” and strongly encouraged him to enter\u00a0<\/span>pharmaceutics. A lot of good it did, for\u00a0in 1962 at age 22 he moved to\u00a0<\/span>Z\u00fcrich, and\u00a0studied Architecture and\u00a0<\/span>industrial design\u00a0at the School of Applied Arts until 1970.<\/span><\/p>\n He made his first paintings as a form of art therapy, since he suffered from night terrors, a condition he suffered from a good portion of his life and which fueled most of his paintings.<\/p>\n He described his own style as ‘biomechanical’, which is pretty spot on.\u00a0His main influences were painters\u00a0<\/span>Ernst Fuchs\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed. He met Salvador Dal\u00ed, to whom he was introduced by painter<\/span>Robert Venosa. He was also a personal friend of\u00a0<\/span>Timothy Leary, so if you want to know if Giger ever tripped, there’s your answer, although you do not want a Giger inspired trip unless you’re just a sucked for punishment.<\/p>\n We all know about him and the Alien movies. His art is to horror art what Lovecraft is to horror fiction.
