It was originally a complex natural tunnel system used by early Christians to escape persecution and conduct their ceremonies but around the 7th century was turned into an actual underground city by the Persians.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"underrgound city of derinkuyu\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_TahXQ2WiF0s\/Syh0--rB25I\/AAAAAAAAZzc\/LL1f7uRa4xs\/s400\/Underground%2Bcity%2Bof%2BDerinkuyu%2B02.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">An entrance. The boulder rolls over and seals the passage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Derinkuyu is the city on the surface, but the city underneath it can house over 3000 people and livestock.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"underground city of derinkuyu\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.planetware.com\/i\/photo\/derinkuyu-tr616.jpg?resize=500%2C334\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not meant for permanent living, more to shelter citizens or refugees in war or crisis.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"underground city of derinkuyu\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chelu.eu\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/The-Underground-City-Of-Derinkuyu-3.jpg?resize=480%2C360\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city underneath Derinkuyu does not end there, it connects to further underground cities across the region.
