No this is a real thing. Raygun Gothic is a general term for retro futuristic science fiction environments.\u00a0Once upon a time, from the 40s to the 60s, they imagined the future. It was bright and slick and full of raygun wielding heroes, and they proceeded to build it.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/158\/387444060_4bc5dd483c.jpg?resize=500%2C335\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And build it they did , until the Vietnam War and the hippies created new paradigms and finally the 70s came and bummed everybody out. But while it lasted it certainly LOOKED like the future. And it was called Googie.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i-cdn.apartmenttherapy.com\/uimages\/la\/052208googie3.jpg?resize=320%2C425\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie architecture\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ronsaari.com\/stockImages\/googie\/chipsExterior.jpg?resize=640%2C416\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2138\/1985290637_0067fab544.jpg?resize=500%2C424\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"424\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1949, architect John Lautner designed a West Hollywood coffee shop called Googies.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie's\" src=\"http:\/\/steampunkopera.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/003.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=640%2C317\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was unique, futuristic with bold angles. The editor of House and Home Magazine, Douglas Haskill, saw the shop as he was driving by and stopped his car. He wrote an article about it and dubbed the look &#8220;Googie&#8221;. \u00a0Other designers inspired by the site \u00a0in turn designed coffee shops, drive\u00a0through\u00a0and restaurants taking the simple idea even\u00a0further.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cynical-c.com\/archives2\/bloggraphics\/gilabend.jpg?resize=400%2C227\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was an architecture for a new, car oriented society. Bold angles, colorful signs, plate glass, sweeping cantilevered roofs and pop-culture imagery were desgined not to entice teh passing pedestrian, but the driver of the automobile. And in the 50s, cars, the economy, the entire future were booming.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"http:\/\/steampunkopera.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/norm2527s.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Soviets put sputnik into space followed by Vostok 12, which carried the first human (Yuri Garagin). Eisenhower shit himself and Kennedy made competing with the Soviets a first class priority. The space race was born.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie architecture\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lh4.google.com\/cosmomod\/Rqw3RJqHWLI\/AAAAAAAAAXE\/K3OarOuOYHU\/LAFrog%20SpaceAge1.jpg?resize=500%2C316\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"googie\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/silver-rockets.com\/images\/2008\/1209_googie.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And in California it had arrived. Much of California was still being built. Unlike the big East Coast cities, already well established and based on\u00a0the\u00a0architecture of the past, California was being built now, for\u00a0the\u00a0future.
